Zale Parry Scholarship

About this scholarship

The Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences awards the Zale Parry Scholarship annually to a certified diver pursuing a master’s degree related to the underwater world. The recipient receives $6,000 plus a $500 voucher toward travel to the scholarship presentation ceremony. Eligible study areas include aquatic biology, ecology and related marine science, marine conservation and education, diving medicine and hyperbarics, ocean engineering, and underwater archaeology. Applicants must reside in the United States or Canada, hold a scuba-diving certification, and be currently enrolled in a qualifying master’s program; people who have already graduated and undergraduate students do not qualify. The official application is a downloadable form that must be printed and mailed with a résumé or curriculum vitae, two recommendation letters from people able to assess the candidate’s credentials and academic work, a 500-word essay explaining career goals and intended use of the award, and copies of all diving certification cards. The complete packet must be postmarked by August 31, 2026 and sent to the Academy’s Santa Barbara mailing address shown on the form. The selected scholar must be able to attend the NOGI banquet to accept the award in person. Selection recognizes academic achievement and a clear commitment to an underwater-related career.

Eligibility

• Be a resident of the United States or Canada
• Hold a current scuba-diving certification
• Be currently enrolled in a master’s degree program rather than already graduated
• Study an eligible marine science, conservation, diving medicine, hyperbaric, ocean engineering, or underwater archaeology field
• Complete and mail the official application form
• Include a résumé or curriculum vitae and two recommendation letters
• Include a 500-word career-goals and award-use essay plus copies of all diving certification cards
• Be able to attend the NOGI banquet to accept the award if selected
