About this scholarship
The VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship provides up to $5,000 for tuition and required fees to U.S. service members and veterans pursuing education after high school. The spring 2027 application period is open on the official VFW scholarship page and closes November 15, 2026. Applicants may be retired, honorably discharged, serving on active duty, or members of the National Guard or Reserve, but they must have completed basic and follow-on training and hold, or have separated at, rank E-5 or below. They must also demonstrate financial need and participate in, be accepted to, or be enrolled in a VA-approved program at an accredited postsecondary institution. The program accepts applications once per academic semester, including from previous applicants and recipients, but limits awards to one person per family per semester. Scholarship checks go directly to the school and may be used only for tuition and fees, not books, internet, or general living expenses. The VFW's official FAQ requires a current FAFSA Student Aid Report for the school year covered by the application, so candidates should complete that process before submitting online.
Eligibility
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Be retired, honorably discharged, active duty, or a member of the National Guard or Reserve
- Have completed basic training and required follow-on training
- Currently hold or have separated at military rank E-5 or below
- Demonstrate financial need and provide the current FAFSA Student Aid Report required by the official FAQ
- Participate in, be accepted to, or be enrolled in a VA-approved program at an accredited postsecondary institution
- Observe the limit of one scholarship recipient per family per semester
- Submit the online application by November 15, 2026 for spring 2027
