About this scholarship

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships were Canada's premier doctoral award, created to attract and retain world-class PhD students at Canadian universities on the basis of academic excellence, research potential, and leadership. The program valued awards at CAD $50,000 per year for up to three years and made up to 166 new awards annually. Important: the Government of Canada has harmonized its graduate funding, and the Vanier CGS program is no longer accepting new applications — prospective doctoral applicants should now apply to the new Canada Graduate Scholarship – Doctoral (CGS-D) program via the official Government of Canada research funding pages. As with Vanier, applicants do not apply directly: you are nominated by the Canadian institution at which you intend to study, and you must confirm that institution's internal deadline. This listing is retained for reference because the Vanier name remains widely searched; use the official site linked here to reach the current doctoral funding program and its deadlines.

Eligibility

  • Be pursuing (or starting) a doctoral degree at a Canadian institution
  • Be nominated by your Canadian institution — you cannot apply directly
  • Confirm your institution's internal nomination deadline
  • Demonstrate academic excellence, research ability, and leadership
  • Apply to the current Canada Graduate Scholarship – Doctoral (CGS-D), as Vanier is closed to new applicants

This opens the official program page — look for the “Apply” button there. Always verify amounts and deadlines on the official site; they change each cycle.
