University of Tokyo Fellowship
Offered by The University of Tokyo
About this scholarship
The University of Tokyo Fellowship is a research grant-in-aid, established in 2004, that supports outstanding self-financed international students enrolling in graduate programmes at Japan's top-ranked university. Recipients receive a monthly grant of ¥200,000 for the standard period of their programme (up to one year for non-degree research students), which substantially covers living costs in Tokyo, though it is a stipend rather than a tuition waiver. About 44 new recipients are selected each year. Eligibility is for excellent self-funded international graduate students (master's, doctoral, or research students) with outstanding academic achievement who are enrolling at the University of Tokyo. There is no central application: candidates apply through their affiliated or prospective graduate school, typically at the same time as submitting their graduate entrance-examination application, and exact requirements and deadlines vary by graduate school, so applicants should contact that school's international office.

- Be self-financed and demonstrate outstanding academic achievement
