University of Manchester President's Doctoral Scholar Award
Offered by University of Manchester
About this scholarship
The President's Doctoral Scholar (PDS) Award is the University of Manchester's flagship doctoral funding initiative, giving outstanding PhD students comprehensive support and a foundation for research training. The award provides a full tuition-fee award — at either the home or international rate — plus an annual maintenance stipend equivalent to the UKRI minimum (£21,805 per year), for 3.5 to 4 years of full-time or part-time study, making it open to both UK and international candidates. As with most flagship UK PhD scholarships, the project and supervisor matter: one of the most important early steps is to contact a potential supervisor and discuss their project before applying. You then specify in the funding section of your PhD application that you wish to be considered for the President's Doctoral Scholarship; your lead supervisor nominates candidates for consideration by the Faculty, and nominated applicants are invited to interview. Eligibility expects a First Class or 2:1 UK honours degree (or international equivalent), ideally a master's qualification at merit or distinction, and some research-related experience demonstrating potential for academic research. Deadlines vary by faculty, with rounds commonly around December and March.
