University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship
Offered by University of Auckland
About this scholarship
The University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship is the flagship PhD funding at New Zealand's top-ranked university, open to international as well as domestic students. For international doctoral students it provides a tax-free living stipend of up to NZ$35,468 per year (2026 rate, adjusted annually for CPI) for up to 36 months of full-time study, and the University covers tuition and Student Services Fees as well as the compulsory single-student international health insurance charge. A convenient feature is that there is no separate application: when you apply for your doctoral programme, you simply indicate that you also wish to be considered for the scholarship, and any student offered a place in a doctoral programme is considered. The scheme is competitive and runs in four rounds each year, with closing dates of 1 February, 1 May, 1 August, and 1 November. International scholars must reside in New Zealand for the duration of their doctorate, though they may undertake research activities and conferences overseas for a cumulative total of no more than 12 months. Selection is based on academic record and research potential.
