The UBC Outstanding International Student Award is a one-time, merit-based entrance scholarship for international undergraduate applicants. UBC awards it to qualified students when they are offered admission, and all international undergraduate applicants are considered for OIS and IMES awards after admission if they apply by the admissions deadline. The official page lists OIS values of CAD $10,000 to CAD $25,000 for the 2025-2026 academic year. It is recorded as partial funding because the award is one-time and does not cover the full cost of a UBC degree, including remaining tuition, student fees, housing, meals, books, health coverage, travel, and personal expenses. Selection is highly competitive and based on academic strength and involvement outside the classroom. Students nominated for UBC need-and-merit International Scholars awards are not considered for OIS. Scholarship decisions are separate from admission decisions, and only successful recipients receive notification of an award offer before their admission acceptance deadline.
Eligibility
- Apply to UBC by the undergraduate admissions deadline
- Be new to UBC from secondary school or post-secondary study
- Study at UBC as an international student on a Canadian study permit
- Demonstrate outstanding academic achievement
- Show strong extracurricular involvement
- Do not be nominated for a need-and-merit UBC International Scholars award
- Accept the one-time award by the stated UBC deadline if selected
