UBC International Major Entrance Scholarship (IMES)
Offered by University of British Columbia
About this scholarship
The International Major Entrance Scholarship (IMES) is the University of British Columbia's flagship merit award for exceptional international undergraduate students entering directly from secondary school. For the 2026/27 academic year, IMES awards are valued at CAD $10,000 to $25,000 per year, and they are renewable for up to three additional years of study (subject to maintaining standing), making them substantial multi-year support — though, as a partial award, they do not cover the full cost of attendance, so recipients should plan for remaining tuition and living costs. There is no separate application: if you apply to UBC by the admissions deadline, you are automatically considered for the IMES (and for the Outstanding International Student Award). To be eligible you must be new to UBC, entering directly from secondary school, an international student studying at UBC on a Canadian study permit, and able to demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and intellectual promise along with impressive extracurricular and community involvement. Offers of admission may begin in December, while scholarship decisions are made between mid-February and the end of April. UBC is consistently ranked among the world's top universities, so the IMES is highly competitive.
