Snyder, Union, and Northumberland Counties Medical Student Scholarship
Offered by The Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society
About this scholarship
The Snyder, Union, and Northumberland Counties Medical Student Scholarship, commonly called the SUN Scholarship, awards two $10,000 scholarships for the 2026-2027 academic year. The Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society administers the program with support from contributions made by Marjorie Poff Gillespy, MD, one of the first women physicians from the three-county region. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must have been Pennsylvania residents for at least 12 months before registering as medical students; time spent in the state solely for earlier undergraduate or graduate study does not count. The committee gives preference to residents of Snyder, Union, or Northumberland County. Candidates must be second-, third-, or fourth-year students enrolled full time at an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school in Pennsylvania. The dedicated online solicitation requires a completed application, two reference letters from people other than family members, and a medical-school letter on official letterhead verifying full-time enrollment and the applicant’s year. Both references must come from either a medical-school professor or a physician and should document integrity, interpersonal skills, and potential as a future physician. Applications opened July 1 and must be submitted by September 30, 2026. Applicants are expected to receive decisions in November.
