About this scholarship

The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program combines degree funding with a pathway into the federal civilian STEM workforce. Scholars receive full tuition and education expenses, a $30,000–$46,000 annual stipend based on degree level, book and health-insurance allowances, summer internships, and guaranteed full-time civilian employment with the sponsoring facility after graduation. Funding lasts from one to five years. In return, each funded academic year creates a matching one-year civilian service commitment. The 2027 cohort is open to citizens of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom who will be at least 18 by January 1, 2028 and can obtain and retain the required security clearance. Applicants need a 3.0 GPA, must request at least one year of funding, and must pursue an approved STEM discipline at an accredited U.S. college or university beginning in fall 2027. Scholars funded for more than 1.5 years generally complete internships. Selection considers academic preparation, the proposed field's alignment with workforce needs, and the applicant's ability to complete both internship and post-degree service obligations.

Eligibility

  • Be a citizen of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom
  • Be at least 18 years old by January 1, 2028
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Pursue an approved STEM degree at an accredited U.S. college or university beginning in fall 2027
  • Request between one and five years of degree funding
  • Be able to obtain and retain the security clearance required by the sponsoring facility
  • Complete internships when required and accept one year of civilian service for each funded year
  • Submit the online application by December 4, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. ET
