About this scholarship

The Shanghai Government Scholarship (SGS) is funded by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission to attract international students to study at universities in Shanghai at undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. It comes in two tiers: Type A is a full scholarship covering tuition, accommodation, a monthly living stipend, and comprehensive medical insurance, while Type B is a partial scholarship covering tuition and medical insurance only. Under Type A, monthly living stipends are roughly ¥2,500 for undergraduates, ¥3,000 for master's students, and ¥3,500 for doctoral candidates. Eligibility requires applicants to be non-Chinese citizens in good health within the age limits for each level (under 25 for undergraduate with a high-school diploma, under 35 for master's with a bachelor's, and under 40 for doctoral with a master's and research ability), and applicants generally need to reach Chinese language level HSK 4 and meet their chosen university and programme's language requirements. Applicants who already hold another scholarship from the Chinese government or organisations are not eligible. Applications are submitted through the official Study in Shanghai portal, which lists participating universities, courses, and procedures, generally between February and April.
