Samuel Fletcher Tapman ASCE Student Chapter Scholarship
Offered by American Society of Civil Engineers
About this scholarship
The Samuel Fletcher Tapman ASCE Student Chapter Scholarship supports continuing undergraduate students preparing for careers in civil engineering or a closely related field. The American Society of Civil Engineers may select as many as 12 recipients each year, with the value of each tuition-and-fee award determined from the income available in the scholarship endowment. Applicants must be ASCE members in good standing and enrolled in an ABET-accredited or equivalent civil-engineering program. Each ASCE Student Chapter may endorse only one candidate, so students should contact their faculty adviser well before the January 15 deadline and complete any local chapter selection process first. The official ASCE form must be completed in one online session. Applicants combine the required materials into one PDF: signed contact and chapter information, including the faculty adviser’s signature; the chapter’s detailed annual budget; an essay of no more than 500 words explaining their motivation for civil engineering, Student Chapter participation, and professional goals; and a one-page résumé. At least two signed recommendation letters on letterhead are required, including one from a faculty member, and the institution must send an official transcript directly to ASCE. Selection considers the essay, academic record, career plans, leadership, potential for professional success, and financial need. Because a chapter can advance only one student, a complete early submission and strong documented ASCE involvement are especially important.
