The MSU Alumni Distinguished Scholarship Commended Finalist Award recognizes 30 finalists in Michigan State University’s competitive merit-scholarship process. Each recipient receives $2,500 per academic year, normally divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. Funding can continue for eight consecutive semesters, giving the award a maximum scheduled value of $10,000 across four undergraduate years. Students cannot apply directly to this commended award. MSU first reviews incoming first-year admission records, invites a group of outstanding candidates to the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship competition, and assigns finalist awards after the competition. Fall 2027 students should therefore submit their complete MSU, Common, or Coalition with Scoir admission application and every required supporting item by November 1, 2026, choosing Early Action for maximum scholarship consideration. Academic strength, intellectual performance in the competition, and the university’s limited award allocation determine selection; financial need is not described as a criterion. Recipients must begin at MSU in the awarded semester, complete at least 12 credits in each eligible fall and spring term, and stay in good academic standing. If enrollment is disrupted, the student must request an approved leave in advance. MSU may also adjust this award when combined with other university scholarships.
Eligibility
- Apply to Michigan State University as an incoming first-year undergraduate student
- Submit the complete Fall 2027 admission application and required materials by November 1, 2026 for maximum scholarship consideration
- Enroll at Michigan State University for the semester in which the scholarship is first awarded
- Complete at least 12 credits each fall and spring semester while receiving the award
- Remain in good academic standing at Michigan State University
- Receive an invitation from MSU to participate in the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship competition
- Be selected as one of 30 commended finalists in the competition
