Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers & Firefighters Scholarship

Offered by Mississippi Office of Student Financial Aid

About this scholarship

The Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers & Firefighters Scholarship provides substantial public-college aid to a qualifying spouse or dependent child of a Mississippi law enforcement officer, full-time firefighter, or volunteer firefighter. The officer or firefighter must have died from injuries or wounds incurred while performing official duties or become permanently and totally disabled because of such line-of-duty injuries. The annual award covers tuition, required fees, and the average cost of campus housing at a Mississippi state-supported college or university. Funding can continue for up to eight semesters or bachelor's degree completion. Applicants complete the Mississippi Aid Application each year by September 15 and submit documentation establishing both the family relationship and the qualifying death or disability. A dependent child must be younger than 23; relationship records include a birth certificate, adoption proof, or marriage license. Permanent-disability cases require the official set of employer or supervisor, physician, Public Employees' Retirement System, and Social Security Administration verifications. Recipients must attend full-time at the undergraduate level. Returning students must complete at least 12 hours per semester with passing grades and maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative college GPA.
