Michigan State University Merit Recognition Scholarship

Offered by Michigan State University

About this scholarship

Michigan State University’s Merit Recognition Scholarship supports a limited number of exceptional non-Michigan residents who become National Merit Finalists and designate MSU as their first-choice institution. The package includes $4,000 per academic year plus double-occupancy housing in an MSU residence hall and the Silver dining plan. It can renew for eight consecutive fall and spring semesters, subject to the university’s scholarship regulations. Off-campus housing is not funded. After living in a residence hall for at least one year, students with sophomore standing or above may be eligible for an on-campus apartment while retaining the double-room allowance and dining component, depending on space and class standing. The award does not cover full tuition, so it is classified as partial funding. There is no separate public Merit Recognition form. Students enter consideration by applying to MSU, progressing through the National Merit process, and naming MSU as first choice under National Merit Scholarship Corporation rules. Fall 2027 applicants should complete admission by November 1, 2026 for maximum consideration; the linked official Apply page is the actionable route. Recipients must remain classified as non-Michigan residents, follow MSU’s on-campus housing procedures to receive the full package, complete at least 12 credits each semester, and remain in good academic standing. The annual value estimate combines the stated $4,000 with MSU’s published campus food-and-housing estimate.
