Michigan State University Distinguished First-year Scholarship

Offered by Michigan State University

About this scholarship

The Michigan State University Distinguished First-year Scholarship provides eight semesters of tuition and associated fees to 20 runners-up in the university’s Alumni Distinguished Scholarship competition. The benefit covers tuition for up to 18 credits in each eligible fall or spring semester and fees corresponding to the recipient’s course load. It does not pay food, housing, books, travel, or other living expenses, so it is classified as partial funding even though its tuition component is comprehensive. There is no separate open scholarship application. MSU first identifies exceptionally strong incoming students from the admission pool and invites them to the academic competition. Fall 2027 candidates should submit a complete first-year admission application and all required documents by November 1, 2026, select Early Action, and then follow any competition invitation they receive. The official Apply page below offers MSU’s own application and the other accepted routes. Recipients must enroll in the semester for which the scholarship was awarded, join and remain in good standing with the Honors College, complete at least 12 credits each semester, and establish a cumulative MSU GPA of at least 3.2. The recorded amount value uses the published 2026–27 resident flat-rate tuition of $8,828 per semester as a conservative annual baseline; actual value varies by residency, fees, course load, and later tuition rates.
