About this scholarship

McGill University Major Entrance Scholarships are centrally administered merit awards for first-time university students entering full-time undergraduate degree programs. The scholarships are awarded by selection committees on the basis of academic achievement and outstanding leadership in school or community activities, with academic excellence treated as the first priority. Major awards are valued at CAD $3,000, CAD $5,000, CAD $10,000, or CAD $12,000 per year and are renewable for up to three or four years if renewal criteria are met, though McGill notes that CAD $12,000 scholarships are available only to Canadian citizens or legal permanent residents of Canada. A separate Major Entrance Scholarship application opens October 1 in the Undergraduate Admissions Applicant Portal and must be submitted soon after the admission application; students should not wait for an admission decision. Applicants from schools outside Canada must submit by January 21, applicants from Ontario and the rest of Canada by February 7, and Quebec CEGEP applicants by March 7. Required documentation includes two letters of reference and, where available, a signed school statement. Transfer, mature, diploma, exchange, special, part-time, and visiting students are not eligible.
