About this scholarship

Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG) empower women from developing countries by funding their education so they can go on to improve the lives of women and children in their home regions. Since 1981, MMEG has provided grants to self-identifying women aged 25 and over who are from eligible developing countries and enrolled in an eligible in-person programme — certificate, undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral students are all welcome to apply. The grant can be used for almost any study-related cost, including academic expenses and supplies, living expenses, transportation, travel, research and fieldwork, or childcare (it cannot pay past-due fees), and MMEG charges no application or processing fees. The programme runs through regional cycles with different windows: the US-Canada Program accepts applications from 15 September to 15 January, the South Africa Program from 15 May to 14 September, and the Latin America & Caribbean Program from 1 June to 30 September. Applications require all documents on the official checklist and two reference letters — one from a faculty member at the applicant's current university and a second from a non-family member who can speak to the applicant's character and work.

Eligibility

  • Be a self-identifying woman aged 25 or older
  • Be a national of an eligible developing country (see MMEG's country list)
  • Be enrolled in an eligible in-person programme and university
  • Aim to improve the lives of women and children in developing countries
  • Submit a complete application with two reference letters (one from a faculty member)

Always verify amounts and deadlines on the official site; they change each cycle.
