Leonard M. Perryman Communications Scholarship

Offered by United Methodist Communications

About this scholarship

The Leonard M. Perryman Communications Scholarship awards $2,500 to one United Methodist racial or ethnic minority student preparing for a career in religion journalism. Applicants must be juniors or seniors in a journalism or communications department at an accredited U.S. college or university. Relevant study can include mass communications, electronic journalism, and print journalism, but the student's career plans should show a clear connection to religion journalism. United Methodist Communications evaluates Christian commitment and participation in church life, academic achievement shown through transcripts and references, journalism experience or demonstrated talent, clarity of professional goals, and potential to succeed as a religion journalist. The official program page links a downloadable application and accepts completed materials either by email or by mail to the Perryman Scholarship Committee. Applications are due March 15 every calendar year. A strong submission should connect samples, experience, and future plans rather than discussing communications only in general terms. The program honors Leonard M. Perryman, a journalist who served The United Methodist Church for nearly three decades.
