John Wright Memorial Scholarship

Offered by TREE Fund

About this scholarship

The John Wright Memorial Scholarship awards one $5,000 tuition scholarship each year to a student intending to enter commercial arboriculture. Wright Tree Service established the award through TREE Fund in memory of company founder John L. Wright and his son John R. Wright. High-school seniors entering college or community college and returning students seeking their first associate or bachelor’s degree at an accredited U.S. institution may apply. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, and work at least part time. Honorably discharged veterans and current members of the U.S. Armed Forces, Reserves, or National Guard receive special consideration. The award is paid directly to the institution in two $2,500 installments, with the spring payment dependent on re-enrollment and GPA standing. Funds may only cover tuition and cannot exceed the student’s anticipated tuition expense. The scholarship is non-renewable, although students may apply again in another year. Applicants use TREE Fund’s portal to provide academic and enrollment information, a transcript, scholarship and extracurricular history, a career essay of no more than 1,000 words, and two recommendations, one from an academic advisor. Selection weighs GPA, essay quality, recommendations, and the likelihood that the applicant will remain in arboriculture or a related green industry. Applications are accepted annually from January 15 through March 15.
