John S. Carasik Scholarship

Offered by MacDougall McCallum Heritage Foundation

About this scholarship

The MacDougall McCallum Heritage Foundation offers the John S. Carasik Scholarship to help a U.S. citizen take part in hands-on Scottish heritage work in and around Oban. The one-time $1,000 award helps defray travel and other project costs rather than paying tuition. A recipient spends at least seven days assisting the Foundation’s partner museums: at least four days with the MacDougall Collection at Dunollie House and at least three days at the Isle of Lismore Gaelic Heritage Centre. Possible work includes researching and cataloging clan artifacts, helping preserve or display collections, recording oral history, photographing historic townships, and studying connections between Lismore and the wider world. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and U.S. citizens; members of Clan MacDougall or Clan McCallum receive preference, but clan membership is not stated as an absolute requirement. The committee looks for adaptable, enthusiastic applicants with strong work habits and a genuine interest in clan history and cultural preservation. The live online form asks for an approximately 500-word statement covering education and goals, clan interest or connection, relevant skills, volunteer work, leadership, and extracurricular experience. Applications are accepted throughout the year for the next April 1 deadline. A recipient must submit a written report within 30 days after the experience for publication on the Foundation’s website.
