Jane C. Waldbaum Archaeological Field School Scholarship
Offered by Archaeological Institute of America
About this scholarship
The Archaeological Institute of America’s Jane C. Waldbaum Archaeological Field School Scholarship provides $2,000 to help a student participate in archaeological fieldwork for the first time. It shares one application with the AIA’s Laura Obolensky and American School of Prehistoric Research field-school scholarships, so applicants complete the official common form rather than a commercial form for the Waldbaum award alone. Eligible students must be at least 18, enrolled at a college or university in the United States or Canada, and have begun the junior or third year of undergraduate study without having completed the first year of graduate school. Prior archaeological fieldwork makes an applicant ineligible. The proposed excavation, survey, or other field-school project must last at least four weeks. Selection considers academic achievement and financial need, and the sponsor especially encourages archaeology and related-field majors as well as minority and disadvantaged students. The online application asks for two academic references, a 300-word essay connecting the chosen project to the applicant’s studies and career goals, project and schedule details, an expense budget and other funding information, and transcripts documenting at least two full years of college coursework. Applications close March 1, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. A selected recipient must provide project acceptance by May 10, join AIA at the student rate, and submit a report, images, and donor thank-you after fieldwork.
