Gertrude M. Cox Scholarship
Offered by American Statistical Association Committee on Women in Statistics and Caucus for Women in Statistics
About this scholarship
The Gertrude M. Cox Scholarship encourages women to enter statistically oriented professions by recognizing two graduate students each year. One $1,000 award goes to a woman entering or in the early stages of master’s or doctoral training, and the other goes to a woman at a more advanced training stage; the committee may also name honorable mentions. Applicants must be women who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada and must be admitted to full-time graduate study in statistics by July 1 of the award year. The live application collects academic history, GPA, honors, and activities. Candidates upload one combined PDF containing a curriculum vitae, a personal essay of at least one double-spaced page, and every academic transcript; unofficial transcripts are acceptable. The essay explains the applicant’s current academic program, intended use of technical training, and examples of leadership, community service, or mentoring. Three reference writers must separately upload PDF letters no longer than two pages and include the candidate’s last name in each filename. A high-resolution headshot is also requested for recipient publicity. There is a deadline discrepancy on the sponsor’s own materials: the live form says February 23 while the ASA overview says March 1. This record conservatively directs applicants to complete everything by February 23.
