Gary R. Bierlein Memorial Scholarship
Offered by Saginaw Community Foundation
About this scholarship
The Gary R. Bierlein Memorial Scholarship awards $1,500 to students attending Saginaw Valley State University who combine academic progress with leadership and involvement in school and community organizations. High school senior applicants must live in Bay, Midland, or Saginaw County; the residency rule is waived for students who are already in college. Every applicant must pursue an undergraduate degree at SVSU and have at least a 2.5 GPA. The fund was created in memory of Saginaw businessman Gary R. Bierlein, whose family emphasized his commitment to community participation. Selection reflects that purpose: demonstrated leadership and extracurricular or school activities receive the greatest weight. Reviewers also consider overall involvement across work, school, and community, the applicant’s career goals, and recommendation materials. Students complete the Saginaw Community Foundation single online application, which may also match them with other eligible Foundation scholarships. The 2027 cycle opens November 1, 2026 and closes February 12, 2027. Applicants should describe their leadership and career direction carefully and arrange for the unrelated reference requested by the common platform. Scholarship decisions are generally communicated by mid-May, and payments are sent directly to the institution after recipient paperwork is complete.
