Frank O’Bannon Grant

Offered by Indiana Commission for Higher Education

About this scholarship

Indiana’s Frank O’Bannon Grant is the state’s primary need-based aid program for eligible Hoosier students. It combines the Higher Education Award for public institutions and the Freedom of Choice Award for eligible private institutions, with separate schedules for proprietary schools and Ivy Tech Community College. Funding applies to tuition and regularly assessed fees. Award values depend on the student’s FAFSA-derived Student Aid Index, institution type, and annual credit completion. For 2026–27, the published base-award schedule reaches $10,600 for an on-time student at an eligible private institution, while public, proprietary, Ivy Tech, and lower-need awards are smaller; that maximum is not promised to every recipient. Applicants must be Indiana residents by December 31 before the aid year and remain residents, be U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens, hold a high-school diploma or GED, and attend an eligible Indiana postsecondary institution full time. Study must lead to an associate or first bachelor’s degree, or an eligible certificate at Ivy Tech or Vincennes University. Students apply only by filing the FAFSA by April 15 each year. Renewal requires satisfactory academic progress and credit completion: 24–29 annual credits qualify for the full-time award level, while 30 or more qualify for the higher on-time amount.
