Frank and Brennie Morgan Prize for Undergraduate Mathematics Research

Offered by American Mathematical Society, Mathematical Association of America, and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics

About this scholarship

The Frank and Brennie Morgan Prize recognizes exceptional mathematical research completed by an undergraduate student, or by undergraduates who submit joint work. It is awarded jointly by the American Mathematical Society, Mathematical Association of America, and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and carries a $1,200 cash prize. Eligible students attend a college or university in Canada, Mexico, the United States, or a U.S. territory. The candidate must still be a student when nominated; graduating during the spring nomination window is permitted, but the nomination and key paper must be submitted before undergraduate status ends. The research may be represented by one or several papers and does not need to have been published. This is a nomination-based prize rather than a conventional student application. The nominator supplies a recommendation letter, a bibliographic citation for the work, and a proposed award citation of no more than 50 words. Unpublished papers and additional support letters may also be included. The official SIAM page states that the next call opens February 1, 2027, while AMS identifies February 1 through May 31 as the annual nomination period. Students should coordinate early with a faculty researcher who can evaluate and nominate their work through the AMS process.

Eligibility

  • Be a current undergraduate student when the nomination and key research paper are submitted
  • Attend a college or university in the United States or its territories, Canada, or Mexico
  • Complete outstanding original research in mathematics as an undergraduate
  • Be nominated rather than self-applying through a conventional scholarship form
  • Provide a nominator recommendation letter
  • Provide the bibliographic citation or research paper materials supporting the nomination
  • Provide a suggested award citation of no more than 50 words
  • Submit all required materials during the official February 1 through May 31 nomination period
