About this scholarship

The Deutschlandstipendium (Germany Scholarship) is a nationwide merit scholarship that supports high-achieving and committed students at German universities, regardless of nationality or that of their parents — so international students are eligible. It provides €300 per month, with half (€150) funded by the federal government and half by private sponsors such as companies, foundations, or alumni, and importantly the payment is income-independent (it is not means-tested and does not reduce most other support such as BAföG). The scholarship is granted for at least one academic year (two semesters) and can be extended if academic performance remains strong. To be eligible you must meet the admission requirements of, and be matriculated at (or about to start at) a state or state-approved German higher education institution; doctoral candidates and students at federal universities (Hochschulen des Bundes) are not eligible. Selection is based not only on excellent grades and academic record but also on social commitment, willingness to take responsibility, and the successful overcoming of personal or educational obstacles. Because it is awarded by individual universities, the application procedure, documents, and deadlines vary by institution, and you apply through your university's own portal in German or English.

Eligibility

  • Meet the admission requirements of a German state or state-approved university
  • Be matriculated or about to start your studies (undergraduate or master's)
  • Not be a doctoral candidate or a student at a federal university
  • Demonstrate strong grades plus social commitment or overcoming of obstacles
  • Apply through your specific university's portal by its deadline
