Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Offered by U.S. Department of State (Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs)
About this scholarship
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, helps American undergraduate students of high financial need study or intern abroad — broadening participation in study abroad among students who might otherwise be unable to afford it. It provides up to $5,000 in merit-based funding for a credit-bearing study-abroad program or career-oriented international internship, and recipients studying an eligible critical-need language can receive a supplemental Critical Need Language Award of up to $3,000, while STEM majors may receive an additional STEM Supplemental Award of up to $1,000. To be eligible you must be an undergraduate in good standing at an accredited U.S. institution (two- or four-year), be receiving (or able to prove you will receive) a Federal Pell Grant during the application or study-abroad period, and be applying to or accepted into a credit-bearing study-abroad or internship program in a country with a U.S. State Department Travel Advisory of Level 1 or 2. Applications are submitted through the Gilman online system and must be certified online by both a financial-aid advisor and a study-abroad advisor, so applicants should start early and work with their campus offices.
