BAEF Fellowships for Americans in Belgium

Offered by Belgian American Educational Foundation

About this scholarship

The Belgian American Educational Foundation will award up to fifteen fellowships for U.S. citizens and permanent residents to pursue advanced study or research in Belgium during 2027–2028. Master’s and PhD students receive a $32,000 personal stipend, while postdoctoral fellows receive $35,000. BAEF also covers health insurance in Belgium through its group policy. Awards normally support twelve months in residence, although projects of at least six months are permitted with a prorated stipend. Applicants may enroll in a Belgian master’s, doctoral, or equivalent professional program; conduct research relevant to a U.S. graduate degree; or undertake post-degree research at a Belgian university or research institution. Postdoctoral applicants must be within two years of the PhD by July 1, 2027. Candidates arrange their own Belgian admission or institutional affiliation and submit a plan of study or research, autobiographical statement, transcripts, and three recommendations. Knowledge of Dutch, French, or German is optional, though applicants should consider the language needs of the proposed host and project. Fellowships may begin between July 1, 2027 and January 3, 2028. The completed application is submitted as PDF documents by email no later than October 31, 2026, and recommenders send their letters separately to the address stated by BAEF.
