About this scholarship

The American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship (AU EGLS) is a selective undergraduate award for international students who combine academic excellence, leadership, global engagement, and commitment to civic and social change. The full AU EGL scholarship covers all billable American University expenses - full tuition, room, and board - for two international students who need a non-immigrant visa, preferably F-1 or J-1, to study in the United States. It does not cover non-billable expenses such as health insurance, books, airfare, taxes, and personal costs, which AU estimates at about $4,000 per year. The scholarship is renewable for a total of four years based on satisfactory academic performance. AU also offers up to eight partial AU EGL scholarships valued at up to $40,000 per year, selected from applicants who complete the same scholarship process. Applicants must first submit the Common Application and supporting documents, then submit AU EGL essays through the applicant portal by the annual deadline. Preference is given to students from diverse and underrepresented global and socioeconomic backgrounds who will return home to improve underserved communities.
