Alaska Space Grant Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship

Offered by Alaska Space Grant Program

About this scholarship

The Alaska Space Grant Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship funds hands-on research or engineering work by STEM undergraduates attending Alaska colleges and universities. Competitive awards provide up to $7,300 directly to the student, with preference for projects that connect clearly to NASA interests and strategic goals while addressing scientific or technical needs relevant to Alaska. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, remain enrolled at an Alaska institution during the award period, and be in good academic standing. Each student must identify a faculty mentor before applying. The mentor supplies a collaboration letter that explains the mentoring relationship, expectations, and responsibilities throughout the project. After completing the official online form, the student emails the Alaska Space Grant office one combined PDF containing a project proposal of no more than three pages, the mentor letter, a resume, and the most recent transcript. The proposal must explain the project’s big-picture purpose, NASA and Alaska relevance, planned methods, timeline, milestones, expected results, and the applicant’s individual responsibilities. Reviewers consider project merit, NASA relevance, the strength of the mentorship, scholastic achievement, and the student’s capability. Recipients must present their work publicly, normally through a poster at the Alaska Space Grant Symposium, and submit the final poster to the program. The next published deadline is March 1, 2027 for summer apprenticeships.
