Alabama Math and Science Teacher Education Program (AMSTEP)

Offered by Alabama Commission on Higher Education

About this scholarship

The Alabama Math and Science Teacher Education Program repays federal student loans for qualified public-school teachers, rather than issuing a conventional tuition scholarship. The base benefit is $3,750 for each semester worked, or $7,500 per year. Teachers serving in a state-designated geographic area with an acute shortage in mathematics or science may receive another $1,250 per semester, bringing the annual maximum to $10,000. Support may continue for as many as four consecutive years. Applicants begin with the direct state Verification/Reimbursement Form: the teacher completes the personal section, a school-system superintendent or human-resources/payroll officer verifies employment, and the school system sends the form to the Alabama State Department of Education for credential review. After approval, the applicant submits proof of Alabama residency and current federal-loan balance to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education and registers in the state payment system. The official page requires full-time math or science teaching in an Alabama public school district or approved charter school, an Alabama professional educator certificate with the appropriate secondary endorsement, U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence, at least 12 months of Alabama residency, and outstanding subsidized or unsubsidized federal loans. The current state form also recognizes specified computer-science preparation routes. No fixed closing date is published, so this record does not repeat the directory’s unsupported August 2027 date.
