About this scholarship

The Aga Khan Foundation's International Scholarship Programme (AKF ISP) supports outstanding students from selected developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies to pursue postgraduate education at reputable universities worldwide. Uniquely, the award is structured as 50% grant and 50% loan, meaning recipients repay half of the amount (with a guarantor) — this design lets the Foundation help more students over time. Master's scholarships are granted for the full duration of the degree; PhD support covers the first two years, after which students are expected to secure alternative funding. The programme operates through local offices in eligible countries — currently including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Kenya, the Kyrgyz Republic, Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania and Uganda — and accepts applications from nationals of those countries residing elsewhere (such as in Canada, Portugal, the USA, Australia and New Zealand). Selection weighs four main criteria: a consistently excellent academic record, genuine financial need, admission to a highly reputable university or programme, and the relevance of the field of study to the Aga Khan Development Network's focus areas. Applicants do not apply online centrally — you contact the Aga Khan Foundation, Aga Khan Education Services (AKES), or Aga Khan Education Board (AKEB) office in your country of residence for forms and deadlines.

Eligibility

  • Be a national of (or originally from) an AKF ISP-eligible country
  • Demonstrate genuine financial need with no other means of funding
  • Have secured (or be seeking) admission to a highly reputable university/programme
  • Choose a field relevant to the AKDN's focus areas
  • Apply through your local AKF/AKES/AKEB office and accept the 50% loan portion
