Abdul Waheed Scholarship in Biochemistry

Offered by Saint Louis University Edward A. Doisy Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

About this scholarship

The Abdul Waheed Scholarship is a competitive Saint Louis University award for researchers joining the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Graduate Program. One new core Ph.D. student and one M.D./Ph.D. student may receive the scholarship each year. The official award includes an enhanced $35,000 annual stipend together with tuition and health insurance. It funds three years for a core Ph.D. scholar and one year for an M.D./Ph.D. scholar. Because a doctoral degree may extend beyond the named funding period and later support becomes the responsibility of the research adviser or doctoral program, the entry does not multiply tuition and benefits into an unsupported $140,000 headline. Candidates are selected for exceptional scholastic achievement, potential for graduate success, and substantial laboratory research experience. A new Ph.D. applicant must apply to and be accepted as a classified, degree-seeking student in Saint Louis University’s Biomedical Sciences Core Graduate Program, then indicate interest in the Waheed Scholarship during that application. Current SLU M.D./Ph.D. students apply when beginning their Ph.D. years and must have selected a mentor whose primary appointment is in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The graduate application generally requires transcripts, three recommendations, evidence of scientific and research preparation, and any international-language documentation. SLU’s current catalog recommends applying by February for priority funding consideration, but the scholarship page does not publish a separate cycle-specific closing date.
