The 2027 Hope College Distinguished Artist Award in Creative Writing is open to high school seniors and transfer students who intend to enroll at Hope in fall 2027. The award provides $3,000 per year and may renew for four years, making $12,000 the possible total rather than a one-time payment. Applicants first complete Hope College’s admission application, then use the live Distinguished Artist Award form to submit a short essay about their reading and writing, a creative portfolio of no more than ten typed pages, and one recommendation from a teacher or mentor who knows them as a student or writer. The sample may be one work or a collection combining fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. The English Department’s dedicated 2027 page gives February 17 at midnight as the submission deadline; this more specific current page controls over a conflicting February 15 date on the general scholarship page. Recipients must declare a creative writing major or minor and maintain at least a 2.6 Hope GPA. The award plus other scholarships, grants, veterans benefits, and employer tuition assistance cannot exceed the college’s calculated cost of attendance. Eligibility also ends when the student graduates, and semesters lost because of an ineligible GPA, excess resources, a third off-campus-study term, or temporary study elsewhere cannot be reclaimed later.
Eligibility
- Be a high school senior or transfer student intending to enroll at Hope College in fall 2027
- Submit a completed application for admission to Hope College
- Complete the Creative Writing Distinguished Artist Award application
- Provide a short essay about reading and writing
- Submit no more than ten typed pages of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, or a combination of those genres
- Provide one recommendation from a teacher or mentor familiar with the applicant as a student or writer
- Declare a creative writing major or minor and maintain at least a 2.6 Hope College GPA for renewal
