Recommendation request packet
Give each recommender a short, organized packet instead of asking them to reconstruct your history.
Choose evidence over status
The best recommender is usually the person who can describe your work, character, improvement, or contribution with examples. A teacher who watched you revise a difficult project can often write a stronger letter than a famous person who barely knows you.
Match the recommender to the award. A service supervisor can speak to community impact; a science teacher or research mentor can support a STEM application; an employer can document reliability and responsibility.
Use this request email structure
Subject: Scholarship recommendation request — [Scholarship] — due [Date]
Hello [Name], I’m applying for [scholarship], which recognizes [one-sentence criteria]. Because you saw my work on [specific class, project, role, or experience], would you feel comfortable writing a strong recommendation by [date]? The letter is submitted through [method]. I attached the criteria, my resume, a short brag sheet, and the essay prompt. I understand if your schedule does not allow it. Thank you for considering my request.
Ask whether the person can write a strong recommendation, not merely any recommendation. Giving them an easy, respectful way to decline protects both of you.
Make a one-page brag sheet
- Scholarship purpose and two or three selection criteria
- Your education and career goal in two sentences
- Three accomplishments relevant to the award, with context or results
- One challenge, growth moment, or quality the recommender directly observed
- Important responsibilities outside school, if relevant
- Deadline, submission instructions, and your contact information

Common questions
What students ask next
Who should write a scholarship recommendation letter?
Choose a teacher, counselor, employer, coach, mentor, or service supervisor who knows your work and can provide relevant examples. Follow any restrictions in the scholarship rules.
How far in advance should I ask?
Three to four weeks is a respectful minimum. Ask earlier during busy college-application months or when one person is supporting several applications.
Should I waive my right to see the letter?
Many applications ask this. A confidential letter can carry more credibility, but read the application’s explanation and make an informed choice. Never pressure a recommender to show you a confidential letter.
