Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant Program
Offered by State Council of Higher Education for Virginia
About this scholarship
The Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant is a non-need-based state award for eligible Virginia students attending participating private nonprofit colleges and universities in the Commonwealth. The 2026 state budget maintains the base award at $5,250, subject to appropriations and the number of eligible students. Students at qualifying private Virginia historically Black colleges and universities may receive an additional award of up to $7,500, bringing possible annual support to $12,750. Applicants must qualify through Virginia domicile rules or the statutory tuition-equity pathway, enroll full-time, and pursue an eligible degree program. Graduate eligibility is limited to approved health-professions study, while religious training and theological education are excluded. Students print the current 2026–27 application, complete it, and submit it to the financial aid office at their participating institution; the college certifies eligibility and enrollment. Returning prior-year recipients receive first priority. New and readmitted fall students who apply by September 15, 2026 share the next priority category. Applications received through October 1 may be considered at a lower priority if funds remain, and most spring-only applicants have a December 1 deadline. The award can be reduced if total aid exceeds the student's cost of attendance.
