Fulbright U.S. Student Program
Offered by U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs
About this scholarship
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program funds U.S. citizens and nationals to study, conduct research, create independent arts projects, or serve as English Teaching Assistants abroad. Study/research opportunities are available in approximately 140 countries, while the award catalogue identifies each country’s permitted fields, affiliations, language expectations, benefits, and special restrictions. Grant support varies by destination but commonly includes round-trip transportation, a maintenance allowance based on local living costs, and accident and sickness coverage. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent before the grant begins; graduating seniors may apply, but candidates who already hold a Ph.D. are ineligible. Creative and performing artists may satisfy the basic education requirement through four years of relevant professional training or experience. Current students apply through their U.S. college or university and must meet the campus deadline, normally four to six weeks before the national deadline. Alumni may apply through a willing former institution or at large. Applications are evaluated on the project or teaching proposal, preparation, host-country fit, personal qualifications, and adaptability. Applicants select one country and award, complete the official IIE application, and follow all award-specific instructions. The 2027–28 national deadline is October 6, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern.
